The Story of Iron and Rye
A New Foundation
I chose to build Iron and Rye in East Village because this neighborhood is currently the most exciting canvas in Detroit. For too long, the story of the East Side was about what was lost. Today, the story is about what is being built. By choosing new construction, we aren't just filling a hole in the streetscape; we are making a permanent, multi-generational bet on the future of this community.
The "Iron" in our name represents both the steel beams and the solid foundation of this new structure—a symbol of the strength and stability we aim to bring to the Kercheval corridor. It is also a nod to the strength and grit that is a staple of the Detroit story.
Why East Village?
We could have opened anywhere, but the "center of gravity" in Detroit has shifted East. We wanted to be part of the "Little Village" energy—surrounded by the arts at The Shepherd, the new single-family homes bringing families back to these blocks, and the creative spirit of the Signal-Return studio.
East Village is a neighborhood that respects the hustle. It’s a place where legacy residents and new pioneers are working together to create something authentic. We wanted to contribute to that by creating a "Third Place"—a spot that isn't home and isn't work, but a community anchor where you can celebrate a win or find a warm seat on a cold Tuesday.
The "Rye" in our identity
At Iron and Rye, the grain is our foundation. Rye represents the resilience of our community and the depth of our flavors. It is the raw material that demands a craftsman’s touch—a nod to the patience and skill required to turn the simple into the exceptional. Just as we are carefully selecting every small-batch bourbon for our shelves, we are carefully designing every square inch of this new building to serve the neighborhood.
- The Pub Feel: While the building is new, the soul is timeless. Think of it as a "Modern Snug"—clean lines and large windows that invite the neighborhood in, paired with the warmth, wood, and hospitality of a classic Irish pub.
- The Sports Bar Splash: We know Detroit is a sports town. We built this space with the technology to catch every game, but with the "elevated" atmosphere that makes it a place you’d want to stay for a second pour of rye.
Our Commitment
Opening a new building is a promise. It’s a promise to keep these lights on, to keep this sidewalk clean, and to be a good neighbor for decades to come. We aren't just building a restaurant; we’re building a landmark. We’re proud to be part of the revival of the East Side community
